{"id":2854,"date":"2017-07-30T19:00:17","date_gmt":"2017-07-30T19:00:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wisdominallthings.com\/?p=2854"},"modified":"2023-01-13T14:07:27","modified_gmt":"2023-01-13T20:07:27","slug":"the-bucket-list-is-a-cover-up-part-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wisdominallthings.com\/staging\/3400\/the-bucket-list-is-a-cover-up-part-1\/","title":{"rendered":"The Bucket List is a Cover Up: Part 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe style=\"border: none;\" title=\"The Bucket List is a Cover Up - Part 1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.podbean.com\/media\/player\/s5psg-dfb5f5?from=yiiadmin&amp;download=1&amp;version=1&amp;skin=1&amp;btn-skin=107&amp;auto=0&amp;share=1&amp;fonts=Helvetica&amp;download=1&amp;rtl=0&amp;pbad=1\" width=\"300\" height=\"122\" scrolling=\"no\" data-name=\"pb-iframe-player\"><\/iframe><br \/>\n<strong>EXPOSE \u00a0| \u00a0Staring into\u00a0the &#8220;Infinite Abyss&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else does this craving, and this helplessness, proclaim but that there was once in man a true happiness, of which all that now remains is the empty print and trace?<\/p>\n<p>This he tries in vain to fill with everything around him, seeking in things that are not there the help he cannot find in those that are, though none can help, since <strong><em>this infinite abyss can be filled only with an infinite and immutable object<\/em><\/strong>; in other words by God himself\u201d &#8211; (emphasis mine) Blaise Pascal,\u00a0<em>P<\/em><em>ensees<\/em> (New York; Penguin Books, 1966), 75.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;&#8230;I came that they may <em><strong>have life and have it abundantly<\/strong><\/em>.&#8221; &#8211; (emphasis mine) Jesus (John 10:10)<\/p>\n<p><strong>EXPLORE \u00a0| \u00a0No Bucket List Compares<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Life abundant. \u00a0Can skydiving even compare?<\/p>\n<p>Truly understood, could\u00a0collecting extreme experiences even come close to\u00a0satisfying the God-designed ache within our souls? \u00a0Given the popularity of &#8220;bucket list&#8221;, you&#8217;d think so.<\/p>\n<p>Because it is designed by God to only be satisfied by God, filling this &#8220;infinite abyss&#8221; is going to require\u00a0more than a bucket\u00a0and a list.<\/p>\n<p>Glomming on\u00a0&#8220;supposed soul-satisfying&#8221; layers can only temporarily distract us from this\u00a0gaping hole in our soul. \u00a0No physical effort, no matter how extreme, could address a\u00a0spiritual problem. \u00a0We&#8217;re not only the wrong person for the job, we lack the right tools. \u00a0Only Jesus can span the width, depth, and breadth, that is this spiritual chasm.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>&#8220;Jesus, on the other hand, not only came to bring spiritual life to people, but He came to bring the best quality of life to them. The eternal life that Jesus imparts is not just long, but it is also rich. He did not just come to gain sheep, but to enable His sheep to flourish and to enjoy contentment, and every other legitimately good thing possible.&#8221;<\/em> &#8211; Dr. Thomas L.\u00a0Constable<\/p>\n<p>There simply isn&#8217;t a bucket list that could account for the plentiful quantity and\u00a0quality of life that Jesus provides. \u00a0When He provides life, is it life that is &#8220;all-around, &#8220;more than&#8221;, beyond what is anticipated, exceeding expectation, going past the expected limit.&#8221; &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/biblehub.com\/greek\/4053.htm\">Strong&#8217;s Concordance definition of &#8220;abundant&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>What would it look like to kick the bucket [list] for the abundant life?<\/p>\n<p><strong>EXECUTE \u00a0| \u00a0Plugging the Hole in the Soul<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t want to imply in any way that the abundant life could be complied into a list. \u00a0In my\u00a0tour of the New Testament (half now, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wisdominallthings.com\/staging\/3400\/the-bucket-list-cover-part-2\/\">the other half is highlighted in Part 2<\/a>), I plucked out possibilities from each book to help explore\u00a0what God intended by &#8220;life abundant&#8221; in ways we may never have before.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. \u00a0Fast for longer than a day (in a healthy way, of course).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Or, fast your way through a challenging trial.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry&#8230;&#8221; &#8211;\u00a0Matthew 4:1-2<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. \u00a0Command a mountain to be &#8220;taken up and thrown into the sea.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">You&#8217;ve probably heard the expression, &#8216;faith that moves mountains.&#8217; \u00a0Have you ever prayed in this way? \u00a0Or, rested in God with such confidence, as to have no doubt when believing great things?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, \u2018Be taken up and thrown into the sea,\u2019 and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him.&#8221; &#8211; Mark 11:23<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. \u00a0Cleanse the temple&#8230; at least once.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">It may not require you to flip tables, but, when conviction erupts, your voice should be heard. \u00a0Is there correction you need to bring to where you fellowship?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold, saying to them, \u201cIt is written, \u2018My house shall be a house of prayer,\u2019 but you have made it a den of robbers.\u201d&#8221; &#8211; Luke 19:45-46<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. \u00a0Track down the answer to your most perplexing question of\/about God.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">What is that one thing you just don&#8217;t get about God? \u00a0Maybe it is something you&#8217;ve been hiding from? \u00a0Or, something that keeps tripping you up over and over? \u00a0Going directly to Jesus, even in the cover of darkness, is the way to address it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;Now there was a man of the Pharisees named\u00a0Nicodemus,\u00a0a ruler of the Jews. This man came to Jesus by night and said to him,\u00a0\u201cRabbi,\u00a0we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do\u00a0unless God is with him.\u201d Jesus answered him,\u00a0\u201cTruly, truly, I say to you, unless one is\u00a0born\u00a0again he cannot\u00a0see the kingdom of God.\u201d Nicodemus said to him, \u201cHow can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother&#8217;s womb and be born?\u201d&#8221; &#8211; John 3:1-4<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. \u00a0Give &#8217;til it feels incredible.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Give past the point of obligation, until you&#8217;re giving cheerfully; realizing that what we own is not ours to keep, but ours to share.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;Now the full number of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one said that any of the things that belonged to him was his own, but they had everything in common.&#8221; &#8211; Acts 4:32<\/p>\n<p><strong>6. \u00a0Do not be ashamed.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Do you fear being exposed as a follower of Christ? \u00a0Is it dependent on the situation? \u00a0What next step could you take to begin dialing back the defenses?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.&#8221; &#8211; Romans 1:16<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Look, all I need is one sixteen<br \/>\nTo brag on my king<br \/>\nRomans 1:16<br \/>\nWe brag about him daily \u2018cause he runs this thing<br \/>\nCan I do it?<br \/>\nYes, sir<br \/>\nCan I do it?<br \/>\nYes, sir<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">From &#8220;One Sixteen&#8221; by Trip Lee<\/p>\n<p><strong>7. \u00a0Begin treating your body as a temple.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">And we&#8217;re not just talking about dieting. \u00a0If the Spirt of God was an invited guest, what should the place look like?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;Do you not know that you are God&#8217;s temple and that God&#8217;s Spirit dwells in you?&#8221; &#8211; 1 Corinthians\u00a03:16<\/p>\n<p><strong>8. \u00a0Let God&#8217;s grace be sufficient.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me. But he said to me,\u00a0\u201cMy grace is sufficient for you, for\u00a0my power is made perfect in weakness.\u201d Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that\u00a0the power of Christ may rest upon me.&#8221; &#8211; 2 Corinthians 12:8-9<\/p>\n<p><strong>9. \u00a0Live one whole day by the Spirit.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;But\u00a0the fruit of the Spirit is\u00a0love, joy, peace, patience,\u00a0kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness,\u00a0self-control;\u00a0against such things there is no law.&#8221;\u00a0&#8211; Galatians\u00a05:22-23<\/p>\n<p><strong>10. \u00a0Speak the truth. \u00a0Only the truth.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Truth is what you have left when you put away falsehood. \u00a0How many relationships would have otherwise been strengthened and healed had the truth been spoken?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you\u00a0speak the truth with his neighbor, for\u00a0we are members one of another.&#8221; &#8211; Ephesians 4:25<\/p>\n<p><strong>11. \u00a0Count all as loss.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">What are you counting as gain that isn&#8217;t Christ?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;But\u00a0whatever gain I had,\u00a0I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of\u00a0the surpassing worth of\u00a0knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I\u00a0have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish&#8230;&#8221; &#8211;\u00a0Philippians 3:7-8<\/p>\n<p><strong>12. \u00a0Kill every idol.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">It is so serious, God wrathfully opposes it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry. For it is because of these things that the wrath of God will come&#8230;&#8221; &#8211;\u00a0Colossians 3:5-6<\/p>\n<p><strong>13. \u00a0Remember, your faith will be reported on.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">What would <em><strong>your<\/strong><\/em> report look like? \u00a0Would it be longer than a paragraph? \u00a0Write down what you think it might look like, and then ask a close friend take a red pen to it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;But Timothy has just now come to us from you and has brought good news about your faith and love&#8230;Therefore, brothers and sisters, in all our distress and persecution we were encouraged about you because of your faith.&#8221; &#8211;\u00a01 Thessalonians 3:6-7<\/p>\n<p>The abundant life is full of the unexpected&#8211;leading us through\u00a0unique, heart pounding circumstances that are truly life-changing. Aside from the fact that it doesn&#8217;t require any special equipment, travel,\u00a0or that you use up precious vacation time, you won&#8217;t need to share your list with anyone&#8211;it will\u00a0be self-evident.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/eepurl.com\/bLv-2j\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1040\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wisdominallthings.com\/staging\/3400\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Wisdom-in-all-things-leadbox-wisdom-delivered.jpg\" alt=\"Sign up for the Wisdom In All Things Weekly Email\" width=\"623\" height=\"140\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"\u201cWhat else does this craving, and this helplessness, proclaim but that there was once in man a true happiness, of which all that now remains is the empty print and trace?
