{"id":3291,"date":"2018-02-19T20:46:39","date_gmt":"2018-02-19T20:46:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wisdominallthings.com\/?p=3291"},"modified":"2021-06-19T16:17:28","modified_gmt":"2021-06-19T16:17:28","slug":"better-instincts-from-good-decision-making","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wisdominallthings.com\/staging\/3400\/better-instincts-from-good-decision-making\/","title":{"rendered":"Better Instincts from Good Decision Making"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe style=\"border: none;\" title=\"Better Instincts from Better Decision Making\" src=\"https:\/\/www.podbean.com\/media\/player\/swwd2-e62998?from=pb6admin&amp;download=1&amp;version=1&amp;auto=0&amp;share=1&amp;download=1&amp;rtl=0&amp;fonts=Helvetica&amp;skin=1&amp;pfauth=&amp;btn-skin=107\" width=\"300\" height=\"122\" scrolling=\"no\" data-name=\"pb-iframe-player\"><\/iframe><br \/>\n<strong>EXPOSE\u00a0 |\u00a0 There is No &#8220;Free-way&#8221; to Making a Good Decision<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Good decisions come from experience.\u00a0 Experience comes from making bad decisions.&#8221;<\/em> &#8211; Mark Twain<\/p>\n<p><strong>EXPLORE\u00a0 |\u00a0 The Art of Instinct<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>No doubt there is a little pain on the path to good decision making.\u00a0 When we skirt the necessary upfront time it may take to get all the facts, and lean on weak instincts to make haste, we make it unnecessarily painful.\u00a0 Instincts can be very helpful, if they are properly informed.\u00a0 After all, don&#8217;t we often say that\u00a0&#8220;your first instinct is usually right&#8221; and\u00a0&#8220;intuition doesn&#8217;t lie&#8221;?<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m familiar with &#8220;going with your gut.&#8221;\u00a0 This &#8216;art&#8217; was something I became aware of early on in my nearly 15 years working in radio.\u00a0Success in radio is all about increasing listeners and listening.\u00a0 The better the mix of music, the better chance you have of attracting, and keeping, listeners.\u00a0 Doing so meant an increase in ratings, which increased the rate card, which led to increased revenue.<\/p>\n<p>But in order to see that success, you needed to be able to &#8220;pick the hits.&#8221;\u00a0 You were limited by time (only 60 min in an hour), and far too many songs to pick from.\u00a0 To this day, radio struggles to get accurate and\/or complete data on listeners and their preferences.\u00a0 So, what is a music programmer to do when they don&#8217;t necessarily have the science?\u00a0 You develop your instincts.\u00a0 You learn to piece together the slices and chards of information to make the best decision possible.\u00a0 Those in the radio industry that did that well, developed the gift of &#8220;the golden gut.&#8221;\u00a0 They were so connected to their audience and their station, they could &#8220;pick the hits&#8221; and pull in the listeners and listening to make their stations successful.<\/p>\n<p>Which is to say, &#8220;the gut&#8221; is not something your born with.\u00a0 It requires the training that only experience can provide.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>&#8220;The world is a lot more complex than our gut is likely to comprehend, at least without training. Train your gut, get better instincts.&#8221; <\/em>&#8211; Seth Godin<\/p>\n<p>I like to think of instinct as being a balance of the art and science of decision making.\u00a0 The art comes with experience, and the science begins with the right decision making process and can be refined to allow you to make the best decision possible, in the least amount of time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>EXECUTE\u00a0 |\u00a0 Decision Analysis and a Good Heuristic<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I have been wading through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coursera.org\/\">some courses on Coursera<\/a> recently.\u00a0 If you&#8217;re not familiar, Coursera offers courses taught by college professors that you can audit for free.\u00a0 One of my classes focuses on decision making; a vital skill to possess regardless of your level of influence or stage of life.<\/p>\n<p>We don&#8217;t always have the time, or the need, for more involved decision analysis, but Seth Godin makes a good point about improving instincts.\u00a0 By having a solid decision making process and reducing subjectivism, we can increase accuracy when making a decision.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Decision Analysis<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In his <em>Foundations of Everyday Leadership<\/em> track,\u00a0Gregory Northcraft, Professor of Business Administration at the\u00a0College of Business, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, provides a framework<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0for good decision making.\u00a0 Essentially, there are three components involved in making decisions:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Action (options) &#8211; what are your available options?\u00a0 What are the &#8220;if-then&#8221; statements that will reveal possible actions to take?<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Uncertainty (probabilities) &#8211; what do you know about what you don&#8217;t know?\u00a0 Where is your understanding the weakest?\u00a0 Are there people or processes that can help you alleviate uncertainty?<br \/>\n<\/span>&#8211; Outcomes (goals) &#8211; what is it you need to achieve?\u00a0 What are acceptable, even desirable, outcomes?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When we care to make a good decision, we&#8217;re more concerned about selecting the best available option(s) to accomplish our goal, or desired outcome.\u00a0 However, uncertainty complicates this process.\u00a0 While we may have a good idea about the actions or options we need to consider to accomplish our specific goals, our bias and the subjectivity of uncertainty can delay and even derail us from reaching our destination.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Hone Your Heuristic<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Our &#8216;decision analysis&#8217; needs to properly<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0navigate uncertainty in order to select the best action option(s).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To flesh out subjectivity and our bias, we need to take a closer look at our heuristic.\u00a0 Heuristics are those &#8220;cognitive \u201cshortcuts\u201d that help us fill in the blanks when there is too little information and limits our search when there is too much&#8221;.\u00a0 How are we cheating ourselves out of the facts by assuming or concluding too quickly?\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Two common biases are anchoring and framing.\u00a0 &#8220;<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anchoring means being influenced by a reference number when estimating.&#8221;\u00a0 We tend to rely too heavily on the first reference we come across.\u00a0 For instance, if I asked you if Mt.
