{"id":368,"date":"2016-03-15T10:00:27","date_gmt":"2016-03-15T10:00:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wisdominallthings.com\/?p=368"},"modified":"2019-03-25T17:21:53","modified_gmt":"2019-03-25T17:21:53","slug":"temptation-a-growth-strategy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wisdominallthings.com\/staging\/3400\/temptation-a-growth-strategy\/","title":{"rendered":"Temptation: A Growth Strategy?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.podbean.com\/media\/player\/xix5j-abed5d?from=yiiadmin&amp;download=1&amp;version=1\" data-link=\"https:\/\/www.podbean.com\/media\/player\/xix5j-abed5d?from=yiiadmin&amp;download=1&amp;version=1\" height=\"122\" width=\"300\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" data-name=\"pb-iframe-player\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>EXPOSE &nbsp;| &nbsp;Temptation&#8217;s Extremes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cTemptation is like a knife, that may either cut the meat or the throat of a man; it may be his food or his poison, his exercise or his destruction.\u201d<\/em> &#8211; Tim Chaddick quoting seventeenth-century English preacher John Owen<\/p>\n<p><strong>EXPLORE &nbsp;|&nbsp; This Calls for an Evacuation&#8230; Plan<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tim Chaddick spent some time with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianitytoday.com\/edstetzer\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ed Stetzer<\/a>, and in that interview presents an interesting, if not empowering, take on our options for responding to temptation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>&#8220;In short, Temptation can kill you or make you stronger.&#8221; &#8211; Tim Chaddick<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Up to this point, if you would have asked me what our response to temptation should be I would have given you the one word response I was taught: flee!&nbsp; You eject&#8211;like a fighter pilot in an F-16 that&#8217;s on fire!<\/p>\n<p>But getting away may be only part of the plan. &nbsp;Consider thinking of our response as you would an evacuation plan. &nbsp;The idea is that there is intention and purpose in our escape, not just urgency.&nbsp; Less panic, more controlled response.<\/p>\n<p>According to Tim, what keeps us from exercising a proper &#8216;getaway plan&#8217; is that:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;Our view of temptation is too shallow (we may be in denial, giving in to ways we are not even aware of), or<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Our understanding of its role in our lives is too narrow (we despair, become discouraged and fearful).&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While we need to have a healthy understanding of temptation, the growth comes not from having avoided it, but in how we trust God to effectively respond to it.<\/p>\n<p>As Tim highlights from Jesus&#8217; response to Satan in the wilderness, when tempted, we need to learn to &#8220;&#8230;lean on truth in the face of a lie.&#8221;&nbsp; Being in possession of the truth allows us to hoist our shield and back away as necessary.<\/p>\n<p><strong>EXECUTE &nbsp;| &nbsp;Temptation As a Growth Strategy&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When looking further at Jesus being tempted in the wilderness (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew+4%3A1-11\" target=\"_blank\">Matt. 4:1-11<\/a>), there are several points we should remember:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Temptation can find you wherever you are.&nbsp; Not just after work, or when you&#8217;re with other guys, but especially when you&#8217;re alone&#8230; even in the wilderness.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Temptation can tempt you no matter who you are.&nbsp; Christian leader.&nbsp; Son of God.&nbsp; An-y-one.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Temptation <strong><em>will<\/em><\/strong> find you.&nbsp; Don&#8217;t be surprised, offended, or ashamed when it comes for you.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Temptation doesn&#8217;t mean you can&#8217;t respond without control.&nbsp; Part of the reason we need to remain alert and prepared.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><em><span id=\"en-NASB-28790\" class=\"text 1Cor-16-13\">Be on the alert, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong<sup>.&nbsp; <\/sup><\/span><\/em><span id=\"en-NASB-28791\" class=\"text 1Cor-16-14\"><em>Let all that you do be done in love. &#8211; 1 Cor. 16:13-14<\/em><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The growth comes from identifying the lie, but then responding to it with truth.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>&#8220;Every temptation contains a lie, which, if believed, weakens our spiritual health and leads us down a destructive path, away from what God intends.
