{"id":509,"date":"2016-01-12T05:00:18","date_gmt":"2016-01-12T05:00:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wisdominallthings.com\/?p=509"},"modified":"2022-03-22T14:29:19","modified_gmt":"2022-03-22T14:29:19","slug":"fear-him-and-have-nothing-to-fear","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wisdominallthings.com\/staging\/3400\/fear-him-and-have-nothing-to-fear\/","title":{"rendered":"Fear Him and Have Nothing To Fear"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.podbean.com\/media\/player\/cw2t4-a7611e?from=yiiadmin&amp;download=1&amp;version=1\" width=\"400\" height=\"122\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" data-link=\"https:\/\/www.podbean.com\/media\/player\/cw2t4-a7611e?from=yiiadmin&amp;download=1&amp;version=1\" data-name=\"pb-iframe-player\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>EXPOSE | Fear That Pleases<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What kind of heart and faith pleases God?\u00a0 John Piper looks at several texts to try and understand what it means for us to fear God.<\/p>\n<p><strong>EXPLORE | Fear Motivates<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>John Piper describes God as being our dread. \u00a0At first glance, you&#8217;re sure he has this wrong. \u00a0How in the world can that be?!<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cFear of God will drive us to hope in God\u2019s steadfast love, and not ourselves.&#8221; &#8211; John Piper<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If we want to please God, Psalm 147:11 reveals what is required: &#8220;&#8230;the Lord takes pleasure in those who fear Him&#8221;. \u00a0That &#8220;dread&#8221; as Piper puts it, drives us toward Him; He becomes our sanctuary. \u00a0This &#8220;respectful fright&#8221; can be a very good thing.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s look as some of the benefits and even how to pursue it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>EXECUTE | Fear Him and Have Nothing To Fear<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We now know where it starts, if we truly want to please God.\u00a0 But what does it mean to fear God&#8211;biblically?<\/p>\n<p>I really like John MacArthur&#8217;s description of what that looks like:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;<span id=\"ctl00_ctl00_MainContent_SubMain_lblContent\">To fear God is to live in the reality of His holiness, His sovereignty, and His judgment of sin. It is to love God, respect Him, reverence Him, adore Him, hold Him in awe, and worship Him.<\/span>&#8221; &#8211; John MacArthur (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gty.org\/resources\/bible-qna\/BQ083112\/How-Do-We-Both-Love-and-Fear-God?Term=what%20is%20the%20fear%20of%20God\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">How Do We Both Love and Fear God?<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Piper points to three passages in particular that will help encourage us toward &#8220;biblical dread&#8221;:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Psalm 25:14- The Lord confides in those who fear him; <b><i>he makes his covenant known to them.<\/i><\/b>\u00a0 If we truly want to know the heart of God, here is our opportunity.\u00a0<b> <i><br \/>\n<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Psalm 34:7 &#8211; The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and <b><i>he rescues them.<\/i><\/b>\u00a0 When I read this, I think of a military response.\u00a0 While in the course of serving Him, should the need arise, He is there to &#8216;pull us out&#8217; as He deems necessary.<b><i><br \/>\n<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Psalm 103:11 &#8211; For as high as the heavens are above the earth, <b><i>So great is His lovingkindness toward those who fear Him.\u00a0 <\/i><\/b>What greater reward could we ask for but that we receive His lovingkindness.\u00a0 Again from MacArthur, a little insight into God&#8217;s lovingkindness:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<span id=\"ctl00_ctl00_MainContent_SubMain_lblContent\">God is possessed by an innate good will toward sinners, an innate kindness. God is by nature merciful, tender-hearted, compassionate. God withholds judgment. God grants benevolent favors because it is His nature. It is a reason to praise Him. It is a reason to honor Him.
