Counting the ‘lasts’ and looking forward to the ‘firsts’

This last week, I found myself counting down “the lasts” with our youngest.  He’s graduating from high school in June, but leaving for the summer before he heads off to college.  A mere 5 weeks away.

Growing up, our desire for our boys was to pray together as a family each evening before bedtime.  Even as they got older and needed, at times, some prompting, they would come into our bedroom to check in and pray.

All through high school, both boys would make a point of coming into our room to say goodnight, spend a few minutes talking about the day, and exchange a final “I love you.”

For the last few years that his older brother has been in college, our youngest still comes in most every evening.  In 5 short weeks, that will come to an end.

While change means counting down “lasts”, it also means we get to start counting up “firsts”.  My wife and I are trying to look at change as life-giving.  It is necessary.  It is good.  And most importantly, God is there.

Thanks for joining me on the journey!
