“My soul… is consumed… with longing”

I first want to say a quick welcome to those who have recently joined us. Here’s how you can sign up for the Wisdom In All Things email newsletter.

My wife and I are continuing to get settled here in Colorado Springs.  We’re discovering a lot of new things to enjoy and getting reacquainted with things we enjoyed from previous visits.  Not the least of which are these perfect mornings and evenings:

Recently, I have been reflecting on 119:20: “My soul is consumed with longing for your rules at all times.”

Now read it a little more slowly: my soul… is consumed… with longing… for your rules… at all times.

For me, that’s when the piercing questions start to flow, like: What truly consumes me? What do I deeply long for? Do I long for God’s rules as passionately as I should? Do I even think about them often enough, let alone long for them at all times?  Yikes.

I’m still working on my answers to those questions, but consider this: if “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom” (and it is), then this longing described in Psalm 119:20 might be the fruition of that fear.

The fear of the Lord compels us, among other things. to ‘be still and know that He is God’ (Psalm 46:10), drawing us in to ‘taste and see that the Lord is good’ (Psalm 34:8) – see that His law is perfect (Psalm 19:1), ultimately leading us to say, “for I find my delight in your commandments, which I love” (Psalm 119:47).

Fear leads to delight, and true delight in God isn’t possible without that reverent fear.

Imagine the delight of longing for and being consumed with His leading, instruction, and commandments at all times?

Thanks for joining me on the journey!

Scott
