Q/Q: the power of our affections

A quote and a question is a simple approach to thinking more deeply about the thoughts, ideas, and advice from authors, historical figures, and leaders.

Quote: “…we become what we behold.” – John Piper

Question: John Piper’s statement, “We become what we behold,” reflects a profound biblical truth that what we focus on shapes who we are. This idea finds its roots in passages such as 2 Corinthians 3:18, where Paul writes that as we behold the glory of the Lord, we are being transformed into His image from one degree of glory to another.  This is a good reminder of the formative power of our attention and affections.

What captures our attention has the power to shape our desires, decisions, and ultimately our character. If we “behold” God—through Scripture, prayer, and worship—we will grow more Christlike. Conversely, if we fixate on worldly things like wealth, status, or entertainment, these things will mold our values and behaviors.
